AH! Emmaline is 15!!!  Emmaline (the Asian one), is my little sister.  Well, my younger sister anyway.  She’s definitely taller than me!  I was in Utah for Christmas break which happens to also be when her birthday is.  She wanted to do something fun with her friends, but 15 is kind of that stage where the kids don’t just want to sing “Happy Birthday” and play “pin the tail on the donkey” anymore.  Enter….

Teen Girl Birthday Party Photo Shoot!

I can’t even describe to you how much I wish I could just do these as my business some times.  These girls are HILARIOUS together.  More than anything, it makes me remember what it was like to be their age.  Such a fun time in life, even though it was definitely a hard time, too.  I love remembering when I’ve been when I’m around these girls.  And it also gives me such a deep appreciation for where I am now.  I guess working with them just really makes me dig deep and think about life in a different perspective.

Happy Birthday, crazy girl!  You have amazing friends, and you’re a freakishly awesome sister!

This family is definitely going to be one I’ll always remember.  I thoroughly enjoyed working with a family with two teenagers.  Family pictures are always different because none of the families I work with are the same!  Taking pictures of a family with a newborn is a completely different atmosphere than taking pictures of a family with toddlers.  Taking pictures of a family with teens and younger kids is different than taking pictures of a family like this one with only teens!  It really is a different dynamic with every family.  But this family, wow.  They are so fun!  I can’t even describe the anticipation I have of shooting their upcoming anniversary party.  I don’t want to say too much about it now, but it’s seriously going to be so much fun!  And DIFFERENT!  Diane-Edits-4 Diane-Edits-12 Diane-Edits-13 Diane-Edits-21 Diane-Edits-19 Diane-Edits-18-BW

Lindsay was gifted this session from her mom as a graduation present.  After Lindsay’s cat passed, her mom decided she wanted to make sure that Ben and Lindsay had pictures with their precious pup.   And it was great for Lindsay to have pictures of her little family so she can always remember what her family looked like when she finished school.

I love the idea of taking pictures of life events.  We focus so much on weddings, births, and birthdays.  Senior pictures get thrown in there and family pictures usually happen every year or two so the Christmas card is updated.  But there’s more we can celebrate in life!  I’ve been thinking a lot lately about my husband’s upcoming graduation.  He’ll be graduating with a Doctoral degree in Occupational Therapy from Creighton.  And I thought about taking his pictures.  Not our family pictures – but pictures of just him.  I know he won’t let me, but I wish he would! This is such a huge achievement in his life.  And I would love to look back and see portraits of just him during this big life adjustment he’s about to make from student to professional.

We live in the day of the “selfie.”  I have to admit, I’m not a “selfie” taker, and I do have some opinions on them.  But I think there is a huge difference between a selfie picture and having professional portraits taken.  I know sometimes as adults it’s hard to step in front of a camera alone, but maybe we should do it a little more often.  How I would love and cherish portraits of just my dad if I had them.  Even in blogging this, I’m realizing that it’s important not only to capture who we are as a family, but to try and be comfortable with capturing who we are as individuals within that family, too.
